“Жил-был слоненок” (“Мурзилка”, 1993)

Жил-был слоненок. Такой маленький-маленький. Да, а что вы удивляетесь? Как и все маленькие дети, ростом метр с небольшим, с маленькими черными бусинками-глазами и большими-большими ушами. Вот такой слоненок!

Слоненок очень любил смотреть на звезды и думать, что где-то там, на далекой и пока неизвестной ему звезде, живет такой же слоненок, как и он, который сейчас тоже с порога своего домика смотрит на далекую звезду под названием Земля и чувствует, что там тоже хотят о нем что-нибудь узнать.

Каждый день слоненок открывал для себя что-нибудь новое. Он замечал, что некоторые звезды образуют круг, иные – конструкцию в виде дома, хоровод Плеяд напоминал выступление хореографического ансамбля “Слонята”. А еще звезды напоминали… конечно же, слоненка! И перед сном слоненок смотрел на серебристого звездного слоника, как тот подмигивает ему серебряным глазом.

My translation in English:

Once upon a time there lived a little elephant. A very, very small one. Well, what wonder is that? Like all small children, he was a meter-odd tall, he had black button-small eyes, and big, big ears. Such little elephant.

The little elephant very much liked to think, gazing at the stars, that somewhere there, on a distant and so far unknown to him star there lived a little elephant, like him, who was now looking from the threshold of his house on a distant star called Earth and felt that somebody there also wanted to know something about him.

Each day the little elephant discovered something new. He discovered that certain stars were organising themselves in a circle, others – in a structure like a house, while the cluster of the Pleiades reminded him of a performance of a ballet group “The Little Elephants”. But also the stars looked to him… like a small elephant, of course. And before going to bed the little elephant watched a small silverish elephant, who was winking at him with his silver eye.
